I really respect small companies that focus on hiring disadvantaged talent with the knowledge that they're mostly a stepping stone for better roles. They don't pay the best or have the most exciting tech, but they treat people well and provide a way to break into the industry.

How do you find them? I really need to find flexible employers that are willing to give me a chance.

And big companies! I got many consulting jobs and internships (inc. IBM and NEC) by making cold calls. At big companies, HR and engineering aren't always up to speed with each other, and sometimes teams just haven't thought about who they need until it shows up at their doorstep.

Even within a large organization, I try and prepare folks on my team for even bigger and better and more exciting roles inside or outside our organization. Helping folks develop themselves and grow is a huge part of what we do.

Yes! Everything I am today is thanks to a shot in the dark email like this, unsolicited, many years ago. Always worth trying. If you have no luck, they may refer you on. I often try to connect people within my network. We’re all rooting for new talent to make it!

can work with larger businesses too. my first real tech job I applied for a tech support job at a local telecom co about 19 years ago. my boss promoted me the next day to a junior sysadmin role. I think about that all the time, and every time I get to hire

I also got my first internship this way. I went to a monthly indie games demo meet up in my city and asked one of the teams if they were looking for help. Small teams appreciate passion for product especially.
