    The bright colours on this glass counter are the result of chemical reactions during 1800 years of being buried in the soil. It was originally black in colour, although all ‘black’ glass is actually very dark blue, green or brown.

    We're open today and tomorrow, 10am-4pm, for the last couple of days of the half-term holiday. From Monday, we'll be open 10am-3pm, Monday to Saturday. Kids under 16 and residents of NE28 go free.

    Were faces added to pottery flagons as decoration or did they have greater significance? This unusual example shows a bearded man - it was more usual to use female faces. Visit our exhibition 'Take a Closer Look' until 4 December.
