Rich data sets could end costly drug discovery explains why it’s time to go beyond genetics when developing drugs. Deep Phenotyping including is a better approach.

The support for UK BioBank has been ... pretty good. And the phenotyping (with MRI, OCT others, and good data linkage) is good. Lots more phenotyping to roll off UK BioBank already.

Totall agree with this viewpoint in from - especially when traditional funders are reluctant to support high costs of cohorts. is a richly studied cohort for 25y but always on the brink. Maybe a new model needed ?.

"Currently, there seems to be wishful thinking that the microbiome contributes to most diseases and pathological processes, no matter how complex their etiology is. It is now time to revert toward a more critical and rigorous scientific approach for microbiome research"

"Of 38 studies meeting the inclusion criteria, all but two (36/38; 95%) concluded that fecal transfer from diseased donors resulted in at least one phenotype of the human disease being greater in the recipient mice when compared with transfers from healthy donors"

Thought provoking paper argues: "exceedingly high proportion of positive studies making causal claims is implausible and likely stems from a combination of insufficient rigor in experimental designs, inappropriate statistical analyses, and bias"

Absolutely! Intentional, thorough multi-modal data collection in healthy controls and disease patients (in both kids and adults!) is fundamental to bedside to bench translational research and seems likely to improve the efficiency of drug development and selection strategies.

New perspective I wrote for where I argue that cohorts with rich molecular and physiological data may allow to prioritize human-relevant targets for drug development In some cases may allow to skip animal testing and move straight to human trials

The predictive power of the microbiome exceeds that of genes- (genome-wide association studies ) in the discrimination of complex human disease |- (An early draft paper as yet not peer reviewed) but confirms my views ⁦
