I feel like many in open source don't consider companies hiring people to work on projects as "sponsoring". It's arguably much more effective and it's costing these companies more $$$ than most money sponsorships.

Yeah. FB sponsors a ton of OSS.

Yup, everyone ignores the salaries + benefits of all the employees working on this stuff, Facebook-created projects and others. Tens (hundreds?) of millions of dollars.

This is the dark matter in the "open source funding crisis" narrative. People claim companies are mooching off of OSS, when the biggest single source of OSS funding is sponsored time from companies.

I think the benefits of sponsored time are becoming more apparent as more people are quitting their jobs to work on open source, and having great difficulty relying on opencollective/patreon to fund themselves.

I guess as someone trying funding having done sponsored time, I'm willing to give it a shot even if it's rare? And thinking about it, I might even say the opposite: I thought (maybe others too) before that doing sponsored open source means working at a big company vs independent?
