Example: @fbOpenSource let me work on Babel when I first joined (I later voluntarily stopped working on it). That cost Facebook my full-time salary. Now I still see Facebook being ostracized for not funding Babel enough.

Yup, everyone ignores the salaries + benefits of all the employees working on this stuff, Facebook-created projects and others. Tens (hundreds?) of millions of dollars.

Perhaps as a PR move some companies could publish (maybe with support/confirmation by some project groups) some basic metrics and info (not specific dollars) about hours/people/allocation percentages towards public stuff. Just a thought to help further the narrative.

Personally think if large companies talked about amount of resources aimed at open source, it would likely bring many other smaller companies along for the ride. Also, the ROI specifics seem to be missing from most advocacy efforts I see, because I believe there is a large ROI.
