It’s because your goal is not grandiose enough. Make it your aim to worship the Creator of the 2 trillion galaxies, each with 200 billion stars, and each with innumerable atoms. What looks like a toy now could be something world-changing in years or even decades. Realize that, have patience, and enjoy the process. This is about startups but is also true of OSS and languages: http://blog.ycombinator.com/why-toys/

I think learning to enjoy the process is a big part of it for me, it is outside of whether what you work on "succeeds" or is finished. Small goals may not feel any more satisfying either, although that sense of progression can go a long way looking back?

I share your pain and I don't deal with it really. I just lose sleep thinking about it and when I have the time to work on it I feel overwhelmed and barely progress.
