Good example, we've surfaced a new ability to allow people to opt into their own crypto hash algo instead of "crypto". Those who chose something like farmhash, metrohash, xxhash as a wasm module, saw obnoxious perf wins on incremental and initial build times.

Yup. Truth. I mean but what's the margins we are talking here on gains in perf? 11% 20% 50% 90%?

It's hard because whatever benchmarking is done is always against really slow unoptimised JS tools. Babel is super slow so of course anything you build in another language will be faster. Hell, anything new you build in JS will be faster.

Maybe webpack’s use case is different but I’m not blaming it on JS the abstract language - I’m blaming it on current popular and available ways to run JS. You have to wait for node to startup or for JS to be parsed. If calling from another native runtime this time will be felt.

Have I said anything disengenuous? It’s possible to build tools which don’t require JS in order to process JS. If so, it’s nice to not have to pay for its VM startup.
