Given the popularity of python, why is there no babel or typescript transpilation equivalent?

No, it isn’t comprehensive enough to be useful. There’s a lot of gotchas in switching from byte strings to Unicode it turns out.

I can’t remember the specific issues I ran into with it because t was years ago but even for moderately sized libraries you don’t get 100% coverage.
