It’s not popular in open source. But e.g. some Google APIs we are using have a similar license. FB is happy because it doesn’t want to sue.

Part of the reason it’s not popular is because Facebook is uncommon in that it open sources core pieces of its stack.

Google for example open source projects: Android, Chrome, Chrome OS, TensorFlow, Polymer, only to name a few. Core business tech.

Same way any other company does? It's unclear what sort of companies the patent clause even protects FB from.

I think "early" core business is a better statement. None of those were at a time when Google was growing its portfolio.

I don't think those are comparable at all. Better comparison for FB would be news feed ranking or something.
