Part of the reason it’s not popular is because Facebook is uncommon in that it open sources core pieces of its stack.

I don't really buy this argument. Uber, Google and others open source core tech that runs their businesses.

Google for example open source projects: Android, Chrome, Chrome OS, TensorFlow, Polymer, only to name a few. Core business tech.

I know you said uncommon but when there's so many exceptions it seems silly to use FB being special as an argument.

Of these examples, I think only TensorFlow qualifies as core, and it’s fairly recent. The rest are platforms they want others to use.

Dart powers the Google ads front end. Literally the tool that brings Google most of its money. Seems pretty core to me?

Although Polymer YT was a very recent thing and Dart is used for internal tools only (eg the CRM) so far as I know.

There's so many examples where Google open source their core tech. Big data libraries, machine learning libraries...

Google's bread and butter. You can only say "that's an exception" so many times.

I guess... Just seemed like the two examples you mentioned had asterisks beside them in my mind. Not trying to argue. Just conversing.

Don't forget https://bazel.build/ . The build engine that keeps code flowing across the entire company.
