I wonder if the people making paid courses donate any of the proceeds to the projects they're teaching.

I have to admit that I've never considered being anything but grateful to companies in my ecosystems building training businesses.
-
You've also built your business on top of these open source projects. What about those projects who are struggling to be sustainable?

The truth is most (all?) people treat open source as free-as-in-beer. Broken model. Makes me so unhappy.
-
It's sad though because the people making these courses are in our community

I do
I contribute code, docs, and am a sponsor of both webpack and Babel. -
Also, my teaching platforms of choice (
@eggheadio and@FrontendMasters) are both webpack sponsors as well. There is some good in the world

I'm not sure what the problem is. You did open source knowing that it was free. Don't like it? Don't do it. Nobody's forcing anyone.

Actually, many people and organizations make money out of a lot of open source projects. Sometimes the OSS is the core of their company!
-
They could donate to it or some OSS project provide hosting solutions and good support, they could use that too, or better - contribute code

Something I've been thinking about is a platform that charged per-pull with some sort of built in contributor discount
