Just that many successful projects don't have great codebases
I mean, React receives very little contributions outside of Facebook and the weird codebase is the biggest reason IMO. Same for Webpack.

Disagree. I think few contribs comes from having few bugs and the core team's disinterest/negligence of added features and PRs in general.

As someone who just fixed a small bug in React core, I totally agree with the weird code comment.
