      most of this is around reliability: npm can automatically detect unexpected changes in node_modules, autorecover from cache corruption, etc

      We did the quick bailout check because the scenario of rouge modification to node_modules is unlikely.

      Quick bailout means you can prefix `yarn install` to stuff like your `start` script without any excessive overhead.
