I hate functions as React children so much. Just use an attribute. So much cleaner and you're not messing with types.

I think we're talking about <Thing>{() => ()}</Thing> v. <Thing render={() => ()}/> In which case, I, too, prefer the "attribute" form.
Yeah exactly. People pass args to the child function and without an attribute name it's always ambiguous what the func actually does.

Do you mean because the "children" prop doesn't have a useful/descriptive name?

Also probably simply that the "expectation" or assumption about what children is changes away from the convention.
