Hongbo Zhang added,
I've been asking myself this for a long time too. We have quite a few large corporate users who I'm sure wouldn't mind supporting us.
the "fair source" folks have tried to solve this but it's really about getting companies to pay their fair share https://fair.io
Would be nice some important open source project could set an example
Could try, but those companies may just fork internally and make patches for themselves and invest devs for that than support?
IANAL but I think most companies could not easily fork an AGPL library legally.
It would be forked from before it was that license
Sure if a project didn't start with AGPL, forking is a lot easier. But changing the license would prohibit later merges from mainline.
Babel is at that point that you either do something like this or become the next Wikipedia, always asking for donations. Or OpenSSL.
I will not agree to changing the project to such a crazy license :) Especially when a majority of the code is still mine.
Fair enough. I'd be hesitant to do it as well. Seems like every big project needs to find its own model to sustain itself.
Current maintainers can fork and offer a maintained v as a way to continue to work on the project sustainability
