What @reactjs patterns are there to prevent building subtrees of components that aren't used and are tossed away?

E.g. Dropdown passed to a menu item as children that only shows on http://state.active . Wrapping in a closure seems really gross

Make the subtree a stateless functional component instead of inlining it.

It won't be called if it doesn't end up in the tree. That's the benefit of lazy evaluation.
