100% agree. and with netlify you get the build visibility in case you want a custom plugin or whatever.

I spent so much time fighting Jekyll in the context of GitHub Pages that it soured me on ever trying it outside of that.

That's actually how I grew to like it! There weren't many solutions at the time where you could just push to a repo and not have to worry about builds.

You should revisit NextJS. They recently added a few new data fetching APIs meant for static sites and they made it very easy for me to make my blog completely static. (But you also have the flexibility of SSR!)

After years of using Jekyll, switched to
@eleven_ty recently for a few projects and would not turn back. Has been a nice balance of fast build times, extensibility and WebPerf. -
I've just switch to Hugo and loving it, the caveat there is I've been working mostly in golang these days.
