As a member myself, I’ll be the first to admit that the church hasn’t done a good job figuring out how gay relationships fit into its theology. If you learn about the fundamental doctrines, it’s easier to understand the difficulty many members (not all) have.

I think the LDS church has done a pretty good job defining how gay relationships fit in. Not at all. Consistently doubling down throughout the years and embedding it into updated Church policies and petitioning against same-sex marriage laws using the 1995 proclamation.
