I'll join the debate without being a landlord. Wouldn't you want to have a passive income
@sebmck? If you can afford it and the risk, would you consider it? How would the profit on your rent compare to GICs or bonds, and your other investments? -
From there, skip the systemic questions about how folks get the capital to buy property and focus in on the behaviors that would different you as a hypothetical landlord and the people you hate. Are there any specific behaviors? Would you the resources to do things differently?

It's because they actually don't provide any service, the land is already there for people to live in it. They actually do the opposite by charging rent. Slave owners were also starting businesses and taking risks. That fact didn't made them any less evil.
