I'm currently in London with a 1y contract It's still marginally better than a 20+ years mortgage when I don't even know if I'll still be in London in 5 years.

It's not "lost", as it's time spent sitting in a train. You can do other stuff. You can even negotiate with your company to work during compute to leave early And that's obviously exaggerated. You can do fine with 2h/day, which is enough to eat diner with your family.
Only having enough time to eat dinner with your family sounds awful. 4 hour commute times are awful for almost everyone, I really don't understand you trying to rationalize it as some effective way of reducing housing prices.

What even is your life at that point? I’d rather take a lower paying job somewhere more affordable so I could actually do things . But that’s the voice of privilege speaking, I could make that decision, many can’t. And that is the crux of the issue, it isn’t a choice for some.

I've done it for 6 years to live rent-free with my family. That's definitely doable

I did 3h per day also for ~8 years and now i think that it definitely worths to change city/country just to avoid it
