I didn't realize how much I hated landlords until I realized that most of the planet are paying other peoples mortgages

Even the average mid weight developer salary would get you next to nothing in central London. You could probably afford the repayments, but that isn’t how it works. You really need a relatively high dual income to stand a chance.
-
But that's central London. It's logical If we look in a 2h circle around work, there are drastically more reasonable options. I've done the 4h/day transport for 6 years. It's doable. You can read/sleep/work on the train

do people not understand that "average" doesn't mean "everyone" or even a majority?

You pay deposit for that risk and also they will take you to court if you dont pay. Whats their risk? The fact that they buy more houses that they can afford without tenats and squeeze every eny from their tenants? Uk regulation is broken..

According to Google, the average in London is 36k. That's enough for a couple to buy a property.
-
A couple on 36k will probably be offered something around 300 (they’d also need a 5% deposit minimum). That budget excludes huge parts of London. This also places a hard requirement on having a dual income.
