I didn't realize how much I hated landlords until I realized that most of the planet are paying other peoples mortgages

But they have a mortgage to pay when you don't. They are absorbing the risk for you. If you suddenly lose your job or want to relocate, you can. But if you had a mortgage, you wouldn't be able to.

That isn’t how it works in the UK, you don’t sign a simple rolling contract. You’re tied in for 6-12 months at minimum. Breaking those contracts can be difficult, expensive, and bad for your future renting prospects. Hardly risk free.

When our home got too small for us we moved but didn’t want to give up our first home. We rented it out and I took a small loss every year on it just to hold on to it for the future. I think some renters are just shocked to see how much it costs to own the home.

I am now a landlord with a Mortgage. I bought the house and then had to move for my family. I barely break even on the home with all the maintenance cost. I couldn't sell it because the first few years of mortgage go straight to interest. I had to rent it.

With Coronavirus, I'm covering the cost of my renter's housing for the foreseeable future. Which is a risk I took by becoming a landlord. The trade was they didn't have to put the $40k up front to buy the home and didn't have to maintain it and I took all the financial risk.

I don't think it increases the price of housing. Mortgage is only one of the costs of maintaining a home. There is home owners insurance, property taxes, maintenance on AC, Heating, Roofs, Yards, etc. They also have to put up 10-20% of the cost of the house upfront to get it.

I'm probably missing the point but I guess it's the same everywhere. Even if I could afford a mortgage I don't have the initial cash needed to buy an house (at least in Italy in some "expensive" area). A rent is much more flexible, obviously more expensive and with no outcome..
