People seriously overestimate the value companies place on open source work and things that do not effect their bottom line. Where are all these altruistic companies paying six figures to do whatever you want???

Absolutely right. I realized after my tweet that folks like you and Dan get to work on your passion projects. And I certainly do not.
We don’t get to work on whatever we want. The things we work on need to be literally lobbied and if they don’t have impact for the company in a direct or indirect (recruiting, some internal usage) then it’s not really evaluated.

This. "OMG you're Sebastian McKenzie and you're only making X?!?" as if companies like FB and Adobe care about community impact *at all*. I don't know that they *should*, but also no one should be surprised that companies this size care about shareholder value more than OSS.
