My first reaction was "wait there are people who think companies value open source work?!?!?!"
People seriously overestimate the value companies place on open source work and things that do not effect their bottom line. Where are all these altruistic companies paying six figures to do whatever you want???

Absolutely right. I realized after my tweet that folks like you and Dan get to work on your passion projects. And I certainly do not.

We don’t get to work on whatever we want. The things we work on need to be literally lobbied and if they don’t have impact for the company in a direct or indirect (recruiting, some internal usage) then it’s not really evaluated.

I interpreted this mostly as “maintainers of famous open source projects don’t make more money simply because the project or people who maintain it are famous”

I’ve always found it odd that the people who expect software that takes 1000s of dev hours to come for free, are often the same who think less than a 6 figure salary for a dev is a travesty. Those salaries are justified somehow.
