Absolutely right. I realized after my tweet that folks like you and Dan get to work on your passion projects. And I certainly do not.

We don’t get to work on whatever we want. The things we work on need to be literally lobbied and if they don’t have impact for the company in a direct or indirect (recruiting, some internal usage) then it’s not really evaluated.

I’ve always found it odd that the people who expect software that takes 1000s of dev hours to come for free, are often the same who think less than a 6 figure salary for a dev is a travesty. Those salaries are justified somehow.
