I don't understand why people are having a go at you for this tweet. I'd be pretty pissed off if this happened to me too. The fact it was stolen is irrelevant. Respecting this data would have included measures to mitigate the real possibility that it could be lost/stolen.

does facebook not encrypt their employees drives?

Laptops are all encrypted and remotely wipeable in case they're stolen, but nothing is stopping someone from using their own unencrypted USB drive on their laptop and saving stuff to it (which is also against company policy).
