BlackVue is a popular brand of premium dashcams. They have "cloud" functionality that allows them to be updated and view footage remotely. Last year they had a privacy snafu. Dashcams connected to their cloud were public-by-default.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaoI2Fltoxs …

Well they "fixed" it by changing the default settings. But there's still a bunch of people who have it set to public from before who are probably oblivious. https://www.blackvue.com/blackvue-over-the-cloud-introducing-enhanced-privacy-controls/ …pic.twitter.com/dskyQZCImk

Even if your video feed is private, for some reason they still show your location on a map unless you explicitly disable sharing your location publicly (the orange dots). It even shows the name set by the user, which is typically the brand and model of car. Nice for thieves.pic.twitter.com/wd1J8xUXPQ

They have to be connected to WiFi in order for this to work. Some connect it to their cars in-built hotspot if it has one. But most people seem to have theirs set to the home WiFi. I took the screenshots during the day so most of the cars aren't home. At night there's a lot more.

Because of that you can usually see into peoples garages. Sometimes there is a washing machine or dryer in sight. I dunno about you but I definitely walk into our garage naked to get clothes.pic.twitter.com/pG4cVqBGqT

No idea why any of this bullshit is even a thing to begin with. Who even wants a public network of shared dashcams? What purpose does that serve? I cannot think of scenarios where you would want this. BlackVue already have an offering for people who manage vehicle fleets.

The velocity, the position of their houses, their conversations, the position of the vehicle, everything is "public" (because you need to create an account, but nothing more)

Yeah it's fucked up. I feel guilty just tweeting about it since it just adds more visibility, but I feel even worse not being able to tell these people what's going on. Maybe sending letters to their home address?

Get a journalist to write about it. This is what they are good at.

Thought that would be futile since it's been written about before last year. Worth a shot though, just emailed the tip lines of a few tech publications.
