i wonder if thanksgiving would be as big of a holiday in america if people were given a humane amount of time off from work, so they could visit their families more often rather than sit in traffic and cram into airports on the same few days around the country

In Australia everything gravitates around Christmas. I don’t understand why that’s relevant?

Most people over 25 organise it round school holidays or Xmas as you mentioned. But having the time off gives them the freedom to do that.
