Unpopular opinion: Markdown is trash. It is unreliable cross platform because it doesn't have a spec to conform to. We already have a perfectly good formatting system in HTML. "But it's a few characters longer!" That's what autocomplete and wysiwyg editors are for. Peace.
Even BBCode of old was more readable and had surprising consistency between forum software
