If React were not funded primarily by Facebook is there anything the project would be doing differently than it is today?

I think the lessons you derive from 100 small companies with 10 developers are significantly different than the lessons you get from 10 companies with 100 developers. Some problems only come up when there’s tension between teams and/or lack of direct communication.
It’s a sliding scale and you can have a mixture of both. The question was about “primarily Facebook”, so add a company like Google in conjunction with Facebook and it still satisfies those requirements and still allows FB “scale” feedback.

It depends on how you set it up for sure. The FB/React setup works because React team has enough influence to dogfood unfinished stuff, communicate ongoing changes, manually replace APIs all over the codebase, etc. That ties a lot into FB engineering culture (no OWNERS etc).

So I wouldn’t say FB itself is essential. But having a platform of FB scale as a lab and the codebase mobility I see in FB engineering culture seems essential to me.
