If React were not funded primarily by Facebook is there anything the project would be doing differently than it is today?

I think Dan's point was exactly that: Facebook's influence makes React move more cautiously and do less experimental and disruptive things, at least in public. Of course it depends on your point of view whether a great bias to stability is good, bad or neutral.

Also worth noting that theres solid science indicating speed and stability are outcomes that enable each other not vice versa. (DORA report, etc)

I think the lessons you derive from 100 small companies with 10 developers are significantly different than the lessons you get from 10 companies with 100 developers. Some problems only come up when there’s tension between teams and/or lack of direct communication.

When everybody talks to each other and is coordinated, you don’t see as vividly the “z-index” kind of problems. Like true isolation and composition isn’t as necessary when everybody talks to each other, but they’re invaluable as the project scales.
