After Nest was recently under fire for putting microphones in devices that didn't need them, like the smoke detector? I'm leaning towards "no"

I'm biased since I work for this company, but I firmly believe they have 0 interest in listening to my drivel. Also there's already a Home/Chromecast in every room of the house :P

They need not be interested in it for it to be accidentally logged somewhere and included in some data set.

This is not the kind of thing that happens at a company of this scale. There is a huge amount of scrutiny given to any project's data requirements, stuff doesn't just get accidentally included.

To me that seems like something that becomes more likely at scale, unless processes have likewise scaled. We have seen Google accidentally ingest data that they didn't mean to. We've also seen their data distribution safeguards fail.

Microphone is explicitly always off unless the local device detects the awake keyword. Seems pretty easy to create anomaly alerts on long audio streams. The devices are creepy and do capture a lot but always on audio logging is just hyper paranoia and borders on conspiracy.

I don't mean to suggest there's a conspiracy. There doesn't have to be agency or intent for a cascade of small events leading to an entity (automated system/contractor/etc) having access to data it shouldn't.

Based on my limited knowledge, Google can only operate at the scale it operates _because_ its processes have been scaled. It's not a startup with 100k employees, it's a company of 100k employees with the processes required to operate effectively.
