this doesn't seem like a healthy way to react to a joke

Garry, hey, woman engineer here. I’ve worked in spaces like yours. Where sexually-charged jokes were encouraged. I felt forced to laugh along, being the only woman, and my colleagues were like, wow, Cher is such a cool girl, can hang with the guys and our locker room talk.

I was sexually harassed as a part of the culture on a regular basis, and was terrified to talk about how uncomfortable I was with the constant objectification of women, especially when I was the target. Eventually, one would think I was cool enough to want to sleep with him.

This happened at literally every single mainly-male work space with this culture, and when I didn’t want to, I was no longer the cool girl, I was the annoying feminist who couldn’t hang. I don’t know if you realize how toxic a culture the “joke” signals AND makes, but you now

have the information, so I hope you consider how jokes like that, a culture like that, pushes women away.

I'd like to add to Cher's POV. I'm not a woman, but I am gay. I can tell you that cultures like this hurt & alienate gay & bisexual men. Men who create workplaces like this often use their sexuality as a frat-house hazing lever over queer men. 1/?
