Their intentions/motivations aren't the only thing that matters though, are they? People who agree with npm's actions largely do so because of the *outcome*, and I suspect most didn't even think to question their ultimate purpose.

And not being widespread? Does that matter? A couple of isolated incidents was enough to provoke a huge backlash, to judge by the HN and GitHub comments. Point being: there must be *some* basis for the broadly held viewpoint which you claim to be unthinkable.
