In their defense, I think part of the issue is that postinstall hooks have been overused with packages in general. There's plenty of non-advertisement content in postinstall hooks that's annoying, doesn't need to be there, and has performance issues.

IIRC Yarn hides the console output which is a great step forward, and npm seems to be trying something similar
