It's a semantic point. Being proud is "feeling deep pleasure or satisfaction as a result of one's own achievements, qualities, or possessions or those of someone with whom one is closely associated." Sebastian's point is that when you're proud, it implies close association.
Australia is one of the best countries on earth? The Australian government has a lot of shameful practices, historically and presently. Incredibly poor treatment of the aboriginal people, reckless environmental decisions, intense xenophobia and indefinite imprisonment of refugees
Racism, sexism, and homophobia are still present throughout Australian culture. Why would I want to say I am a proud Australian when all that is happening **now**. Why would I want to be associated with that?
You likely had no idea about any of that. And if you did, then it's an outrageous thing to say. I have Australian in my bio because it is a part of my identity. Culturally I am Australian, and it is my home country. I am grateful to have been born there but I am not proud.
