Why do people give a platform to those they disagree with? If someone says something overtly ridiculous and harmful, why broadcast it? Am I missing something that somehow makes the situation better?

You're using a broader definition of the word platform than I am. Platform refers specifically to someone's own Twitter profile. Read my replies for more clarification.
