Why do people give a platform to those they disagree with? If someone says something overtly ridiculous and harmful, why broadcast it? Am I missing something that somehow makes the situation better?

The idea that earth was round was once radical, even heretical. If you're genuinely interested for a counter argument, read John Stuart Mill's essay "Of the Liberty of Thought and Discussion" (https://bit.ly/2NqVI53 ). Popper also has said smart things on limiting speech.
Nobody is under any obligation to broadcast opinions they disagree with. There's a big difference between suppressing speech and willingly retweeting it for drama. I am referencing specific examples on my original tweet that you likely are not familiar with.
