Why do people give a platform to those they disagree with? If someone says something overtly ridiculous and harmful, why broadcast it? Am I missing something that somehow makes the situation better?

Your first two questions are completely different. You seem to equate people who disagree with you with being ridiculous and harmful. Which ironically, is ridiculous and harmful.
The follow up questions are me clarifying what I'm trying to convey
