Why do people give a platform to those they disagree with? If someone says something overtly ridiculous and harmful, why broadcast it? Am I missing something that somehow makes the situation better?

Some seem to be conflating talking with someone and quote retweeting to their tens of thousands of followers. Not the same thing.
