Why do people give a platform to those they disagree with? If someone says something overtly ridiculous and harmful, why broadcast it? Am I missing something that somehow makes the situation better?

Because when people say this stuff unchallenged it gets internalised.
I get that, but these are fundamentally minority opinions that everyone seems to acknowledge as fanatical without having to state it. If anything, broadcasting it actually brings others together who share the same views making it much worse.

I agree that it's a risk but I do know that there are communities in which these people are thought leaders (and their CSS is very clever, so deserved technically) and that influence has to be challenged. I don't think it's an easy trade-off to figure out tho.
