I've hid the activity bar in VSCode and have been using keyboard shortcuts. Would highly recommend it. The editor feels a lot more balanced and there's way less empty space.

real q, why not? just prefer IDEs or what?

No real reason. Whenever I've changed editor it's usually been a very slow progression. TextMate -> Sublime Text -> Atom -> VSCode. I'm a really fast typer so maybe it's worth investing in something a lot more keyboard oriented but the barrier is high.
