This seems obvious, but OpenCollective projects have zero accountability to spend their money wisely. If you're going to donate, please investigate and see if it's something you actually want to support.

This is an interesting topic, because who decides if it's "wise" or not? Deciding to support an OSS project doesn't mean you should get a say in how the funds are spent, does it? I don't think so.

I would consider funds to be spent wisely if there are concrete guidelines for calculating payouts, rather than guestimating hours and rates. Also processes for those outside of the "core team" to take money out rather than being it a secret club.

It occurs to me now that we're probably thinking of significantly different projects. Most of mine have been 95%+ single maintainer. I imagine this is legit different for larger projects (e.g. Babel).

Oh yeah, I think the dynamic changes significantly, especially the more money and people involved. The burden is definitely way higher with expenses paying tens of thousands to only a few people. With smaller projects or small team, I think there's stronger implied trust.

the current discussion focuses on "future spending", but there is also a legitimate case of withdrawing money in account of past work, but yeah - generally this case applies to smaller projects (or newly opened for funding)

If there's a justification for withdrawing past work then every single dollar in the Babel OpenCollective is mine.

I think this is probably situational too. For example, what if Babel were to be deprecated and not supported. At that point, I think it would be reasonable to e.g. divide the money between the contributors based on the % of contributions.

Seems more questionable to do that for a project that's actively being developed, where that money might be "needed" to finance future work

IMHO you definitely deserve getting something for the past work, would be silly to state otherwise - even if the project was not funded back then you have worked a ton and made it what it is today
