Why does a project backed by a billion(s) dollar company have a sponsor button? The primary sponsor (FB Open Source) more than covers all expenses. The other backers kinda seem unnecessary.

I guess we’ll have to disagree. Oh well, I’m still taking a break from OSS so I won’t dive deeper. I just wish that wasn’t the answer.
I disagree with the overall sentiment that Facebook should: - Open source a project - Have employees work on it - And financially fund others too All the while other companies profit without the same level of donation and alturisum.
then the repo shouldn't be facebook/react-native
That... doesn't make any sense? Why would you think it shouldn't be in the facebook org?
The Jest Open Collective is run entirely by the community for the community. Facebook contributes, but employees cannot benefit in any way We want React Native to follow this model but it's hard both because of the dynamics you mention and selecting the "core" admins
For Jest, the core admins we're obvious choices and the way funds are distributed and used are non-political and straightforward React Native is a much bigger community with a different dynamic of stakeholders so it would need more structure to set it up
