I'm actually curious how you got into programming. Would you do it all over?

Long story. I learned to type super young. So in elementary school they let me do whatever I wanted in typing class. Found Qbasic and started making games. Then got into Visual Basic at home, made AOL programs and games (cont)

So then I got into music. Did that for a while. Go signed, had fun, Napster came out, shit became less lucrative. I opened a studio and offered marketing packages like photoshopping covers and flash sites with music players and shit. (Cont...)

Then the music shit was totally over and I needed a job, saw one in the newspaper and lied my way in, and made flash sites for like 4 years.

If I could do it all over again, I would have taken music more seriously and really grinded. I turned down opportunities because I wanted to be that boi, but it was just paying dues but I didn’t get that because I was a kid.

I legit hate this industry. It’s what I do and what I’m good at, but I feel out of place as fuck tbh.

Tech Twitter is not irl tech. You’re more normal than the insufferable Twitter tech archetype. Don’t let this fucking bubble get you down. You do you, dawg.

Yeah that’s true but it’s the same deal at a lot of workplaces and conferences too. This strange ass culture that I just don’t align with well.

One thing that’s worth noting re: conferences is that I do tend to get along with the other speakers. It’s rare for me to catch shit from anyone that produces anything of value.

wtf is up with conference culture. It’s fine if some people don’t drink, but any conference event or afterparty that has drinks is immediately branded this abject project in toxic masculinity. Am I the only one who sees conferences as a get-away / chance to chill and have fun?!

What conference have you been to where someone has classified serving drinks as toxic masculinity? It’s only problematic when the venue bans people under 21 and doesn’t serve non-alcoholic drinks.

I’ve been to very few conferences (really just Fluent) which was awesome from top to bottom. They close down San Pedro market just for us, with free food, beer and wine. I’m talking about the endless complaints on Twitter. It’s like doing shit like this is somehow a bad thing.

I think complaints are mostly about meetups where there is beer but no water. That kind of thing. Or where everyone goes to a pub as the only after party option.
