What JS tools are developers constantly struggling to optimize for performance? Webpack gets a lot of attention but not sure if it's an outlier? Why is it even necessary in the first place.

I think the problem with webpack is there's a lot of footguns that people hit. In a more closed system like Gatsby etc. webpack build performance is pretty predictable
It's only more predictable because you all are the ones doing the optimization, right?

Right. I was agreeing with you :-) gatsby turns webpack into a closed system that's reasonably and predictably fast

This is my hunch on future directions. Faster builds depend on introducing some constraints.
