What JS tools are developers constantly struggling to optimize for performance? Webpack gets a lot of attention but not sure if it's an outlier? Why is it even necessary in the first place.

I think the problem with webpack is there's a lot of footguns that people hit. In a more closed system like Gatsby etc. webpack build performance is pretty predictable

with Webpack you also have the plethora of available plugins, that then sometimes expose their own config...

I guess Webpack, inheriting JS scalability problems, did not scale well even for mid-sized apps, so regular app devs, knowing JS, started poking it to make faster, but couldn't contribute to overly complicated internals, so went with optimizing plugins.https://twitter.com/sompylasar/status/1148839262051164160 …

Those who went further learned the internals (architecture), but it cannot be changed, so those who went even further learned that JS performance is the underlying problem and went to V8 profiles.
