Any chance we could avoid the jsx extension. I kinda hate it (tsx too).
Maybe. Syntax is derived from the file extension, or comments. Adding another place to describe it, like in config, just increases the surface area even more. I'm not a fan of non-standard syntax being in .js. The @flow annotation is a hack.
Your logic is undeniable, but I still don't like the extension jsx
I'll probably get over it
I honestly don't get why. It's NOT JavaScript! It's almost like renaming TypeScript files .js. If I get .js sent, I expect JavaScript and to be able to run it without transpiling.
JavaScript is evolving in stages with pluggable parts of the syntax. Similar to how CSS properties and at-rules get added over time, but CSS syntax doesn't change a lot. There is not one fixed variant of JavaScript syntax that you can say is JavaScript and the rest is not.
I can buy that argument for proposed ES syntax but as it stands, JSX, Flow, and TypeScript syntax are proprietary and not up for standardization for a very long time
That is true, but ".js is what I can run without a build step" is still a vague definition and a moving target due to syntax modules and engine variations. Not long ago it was exclusively ES5, now it's only ES6. Why not .jses5, .jses6, .jses2015, .jsflow, etc. then?
