But afaik the software code is BSD, and the assets are CC-BY 4.0. Someone there at the inception of the project might know more (

Literally what it says. It's the legal default for open source projects to have copyright assigned to the individual contributor of each bit of code, in the absence of a specific copyright grant such as a CLA.
