I am applying for a visa to visit Australia as a speaker and hey, wow, didn't realize anybody put more effort into making it hard to visit your country than the US but this system is magnificently terrible.

Echoing the other replies. An Australian ETA is about as hard as an American ESTA.

Echoing my replies to those replies, the conference thinks an ETA isn't good enough for some reason and is making me apply for something much more complicated.

It's not unusual for Australia to deport you on the spot if they think you have the wrong visa. Applying for the annoying one is probably a safer bet.

Also they are less friendly to immigration in general than Trump, so bear that in mind. The conference really should provide a visa service to do the paperwork for you.

I'm well aware of it. Was just unsure what the relation to incorrect visas or Laurie was.

Look, I am not sure what your agenda is but the UK, US and Australia are notoriously hassle-prone when it comes to conference speakers. You can risk it with an ETA or not. Doing so can be unwise. The conference isn't crazy to make Laurie get a formal visa.
