I am applying for a visa to visit Australia as a speaker and hey, wow, didn't realize anybody put more effort into making it hard to visit your country than the US but this system is magnificently terrible.

Echoing the other replies. An Australian ETA is about as hard as an American ESTA.

Echoing my replies to those replies, the conference thinks an ETA isn't good enough for some reason and is making me apply for something much more complicated.

It's not unusual for Australia to deport you on the spot if they think you have the wrong visa. Applying for the annoying one is probably a safer bet.
